Day 1

Following a well-worn path, you make your way along the edge of your territory, ears alert and pelt prickling. Poachers are everywhere wreaking havoc, even moreso than usual. Will it ever end?

The wind shifts and the scent of a new lioness briefly touches your nose. She doesn't seem to be in heat which is a shame, but your curiosity gets the better of you and you begin to track her.

It's not long before you come across a rather lovely looking lioness crouched down under some cover, eyes keen on something in the distance.

Hey! Who are you?
Page 1

Her head jerks up and she locks eyes with you, freezing as she assesses you. You pose no threat; you're simply curious. Her tail flicks back and forth, and at last she rises to her paws and makes her way over to you.

"I'm Mutsivi. I was just tracking a group of poachers, but they've disappeared." She looks back to the horizon with a scowl. "They're relentless this year, aren't they? It seems worse than usual. They just keep coming. It's like they have a big camp somewhere, or something..." She trails off and falls silent, realizing she's doing all the talking.

Are all humans like this?
Page 2

With a faint smile she shakes her head and flicks her tail in the direction she was headed.

"No, just the heartless ones. The destruction they cause is immense. There are good humans too, though. They want to help and care for animals and I've watched them attack the heartless ones. It's what gave our pride the idea to hunt them down ourselves. The humans are rather useless with their little noses so they have a hard time tracking the poachers."

Let me get this straight. You HUNT the poachers?
Page 3

Her laugh rumbles through her chest at the shocked look on your face.

"We do indeed. The amount of bloodshed has awakened our ancestors and they are angry. The humans cannot do it all themselves. These wasteful humans are killing animals purely for sport; they don't even eat the meat from their bones. Despicable."

She spits the last word out through her teeth with a hiss and her tail thrashes angrily.

Your ancestors have awakened?
Page 4

"They have. Kutsiva protects us and aids in our quest against the poachers. But we have been far too busy fighting them back on our own territory, and have yet to perform the ritual we need to. They set traps, lure animals with false sounds, set out poisoned food..." She makes a disgusted face and looks to you thoughtfully.

"Could you help us? You look strong and capable, and this concerns us all." She tilts her head, looking you up and down. "What did you say your name was?"

I'm [NAME]. Tell me what I need to do.
Page 5

Her eyes brighten and she looks eager now.

"Thank you, [NAME]. Go and track down and defeat 10 poachers for us. You must use your own strength for this one and avoid using Lucky Feet, as it will call the spirit to help you instead of to the ritual. Please be safe, and return to me once you have defeated them."

You have not fulfilled your task yet. 0/10 poachers defeated.

Page 6

To complete this quest, you must defeat 10 poachers in battle. You can find the eligible encounters here: Bush of Phundundu - Poacher Encounters.

You can view your progress after each battle on the Bush of Phundundu page. With each won battle, the points towards this quest will be added, and if you defeat more poachers in a battle, then you will receive additional points towards your progress! Time to kick some poacher butts.

Note: You can't use Lucky Feet in these battles.

Once you have accumulated 10 defeated poachers count, return to Mutsivi, and click the "Inform Her" button.

You return to Mutsivi, the blood of the poachers fresh on your claws. She nods approvingly.

"You did well, [NAME]. Your deeds have proven that you deserve the spirit's blessing. Meet me here tomorrow and I will bring you to our pride for the trance. Bring an open heart and a vengeful spirit. It's time to take down these poachers once and for all."

Her eyes flash fiercely and she stalks away determinedly, flicking her tail in farewell.

Page 6a

You must wait for the next Rollover to proceed with the story.

Day 2

As day breaks, you follow Mutsivi as she leads you into the heart of her territory. Lionesses are gathered up ahead, congregating around a smoking mound. Seeing your approach, a lioness breaks off and pads up to Mutsivi with a worried expression.

"Mutsivi! We have a problem."

What's wrong?
Page 7

The lioness smiles at you briefly before turning to Mutsivi to explain.

"A herd of water buffalo came through and trampled all of the herbs we need for the ritual...it's a disaster."

Mutsivi frowns and looks to you.

"[NAME], how are you with herbs? Do you think you can help us? If we work together, maybe we can find what we need so that we can start the ritual."

I'll see what I can do. What do we need?
Page 8

"If you could bring us these, I think we can begin:"

0/50 Herbs donated.

0/20 Underbrush donated.

0/20 Large Leaves donated.

You have not fulfilled your task yet.
Page 8a

To complete this quest, you must donate the following items to Mutsivi:

  • 50 Herbs
  • 20 Underbrush
  • 20 Large Leaves

You can view your progress on the Bush of Phundundu page, and you do not need to donate everything at once. All of these items can be found commonly in Explore, or can be purchased from other players via Branch Sales or the Trading Center. Additionally, herbs can be obtained from Herb Bundles or by buying them from the Beetle Grounds.

Once you have donated all the required resources, proceed to click the "Join the Ritual" button.

The lionesses gather together around the mound and you can feel their excitement as their energy begins to build.

A melody rises out of the cacophony of sound, and your ears can pick out the individual voices over time as some lionesses begin to sing while others hum. You can feel the energy in your chest and through your paws, and you close your eyes to drink it in.

They sing of their mothers and grandmothers and of their history within the pride. Each lioness speaks her name out loud as the song reaches a climax.

Continue
Page 9

The song ends, and you see movement in the smoke of the mound. The visions aren't clear, but shouts of joy ring out within the pride, and eyes brighten as they look into the smoke. The spirits? It must be! You can't see them clearly, but you can sense their presence.

The ritual worked!

Continue
Page 10

Mutsivi steps close to the smoking mound in front of the rest of the pride and closes her eyes, taking a deep breath.

"Kutsiva! Hear us!" She caterwauls. "Grant us your blessing and help us defeat the great evil that is plaguing this land. We can't let them win!"

With a shriek, the fire erupts into a swirling cloud of embers and all goes dark.

Watch in awe
Page 11

A large smoky form stands upon the mound, eyes glowing red-hot as it looks at the pride of lions gathered around it.

You can only assume this is Kutsiva.

He looks like a ferus, a primal being in every sense of the word. Strangely, antlers sprout from his head like a large deer.

Kutsiva roars fiercely, causing the very ground beneath your feet to tremble and a shiver to crawl up your spine.

Bow your head
Page 12

The great cat grumbles at Mutsivi and the lioness lifts her head proudly.

All is quiet for a moment, as if they are having a discussion--but you hear nothing. It seems the ancient one does not want you to hear what he has to say.

Mutsivi nods and smiles at you.

"Of course, father Kutsiva. [NAME] will be welcomed as one of our own. We will do you proud."

Thank you, great Kutsiva
Page 13

Kutsiva looks at you with an unreadable expression. With smoky paw steps, he descends the mound and stands in front of you.

A loud roar erupts from his jaws, and smoke billows into your face, causing you to gasp and cough for breath. It smells like...nothing. How can smoke not have a smell?

A tingling rushes through your body, and you suddenly feel as if you can take on an elephant all by yourself. What a rush!

What just happened?
Page 14

You blink your eyes open to look back at Kutsiva, but the spirit is gone. You hear a purr, and Mutsivi bumps her head gently against your shoulder.

"Well done! Can you feel it? That is Kutsiva's blessing; now we can fight back. These poachers will not win!"

The rest of the pride gathers around with excited chattering and Mutsivi smiles.

"You have been given unmatched strength, and when you fight against the poachers the spirits will aide you."

Let's go then!
Page 15

Mutsivi laughs.

"Eager, are we? That's good! Now that you have the blessing, will you uphold the promise you made? We must find the poacher camp if we are to succeed. If you can do that, I will join the rest of the pride as we continue to track their movements and foil their plans."

Mutsivi looks around at the gathered lionesses with a smile, and the energy in the clearing is contagious.

Just tell me where I can find them
Page 16

"Perfect! You'll have to do some scouting of your own alongside fighting them. We need as much information as we can get. Don't come back until you've ridded the world of their filth!"

0/10 poachers defeated.
0/5 poachers interrupted.

You have not fulfilled your task yet.

Page 17

To complete this quest, you must defeat 10 poachers in battle and interrupt 5 poachers in Explore. You can find the eligible poacher battle encounters here: Bush of Phundundu - Poacher Encounters.

You can view your progress after each battle on the Bush of Phundundu page. With each won battle, the points towards this quest will be added, and if you defeat more poachers in a battle, then you will receive additional points towards your progress! Time to kick some poacher butts, again.

Note: You can't use Lucky Feet in these battles. Additionally, you will receive a "Trance" effect boost during these poacher battles (from +2 to +5 additional damage per attack)!

Once you have completed the tasks, return to Mutsivi, and click the "I am back!" button.

Poacher Interruption

Clicking the "Interrupt" button on the following encounters will grant you +1 progress towards the "Interrupt 5 poachers" requirement.

A loud buzzing fills the air, sounding annoyingly similar to some large insects. It's not a giant hornet, however - it's a drone! You have seen these before, and you know the stench of death that emanates from the humans that control them.
Action Result Reward
Interrupt With a big leap and a deep roar, the humans panic, dropping everything as they run to their truck. You lunge at the vehicle, tearing and ripping at some of the components before it speeds away. It looks like some of their cargo spilled on the floor in their haste to escape - including an entire antelope! +1 Poacher Interrupted
+1 Broken Drone
+1 Poacher Gun
+1 Sable Antelope Carcass
You catch the scent of a familiar human - someone you recognize, but can't quite put your paw on from where. It must be somebody who often kills animals around these parts. You're not sure if it's a bad person or not, but... you better make sure they never kill your cubs!
Action Result Reward
Interrupt You growl and roar fiercely, letting this human know that this land is patrolled by a mighty lion. The human drops everything and backs off, no weapon in sight. Good - you hope he never comes back! +1 Poacher Interrupted
+1 Prevent Point
+2 Medium Meat Chunk
You find a horrible sight - two humans skinning a zebra. At least when you take a hide, it's from a dried-up carcass after you've fed from it! AND you make sure to take down the sickest animal in the herd, unlike these vermin...
Action Result Reward
Interrupt Your surprise attack is terrifying enough for the humans to flee in alarm, dropping all their weapons in the process! You claim the zebra carcass as your own - ensuring its sacrifice feeds your cubs and keeps the circle of life in balance. +1 Poacher Interrupted
+2 Prevent Points
+1 Poacher Gun
+1 Zebra carcass
You hear the truck before you see it... but it's not the engine sound that fills your ears, it's the cries of the birds trapped inside in multiple cages! It looks like one of the humans in charge of it is busy talking to an object.
Action Result Reward
Interrupt You maul the car, tearing at it with your jaws and claws. The human runs away, screaming into his ear box. You pull things apart - cages included - and set the birds free. You've seen what humans do to their own birds and won't let them take these! +1 Poacher Interrupted
+1 Prevent Point
+1 Rugged Tire
You spot some shady looking humans setting up a trap. There's no doubt they are up to no good!
Action Result Reward
Interrupt You show no mercy. You've seen the cruelty of these traps, and seen them claim the lives of some of your animal friends! +1 Poacher Interrupted
+2 Prevent Points
+1 Poacher Gun
+1 Human Liver

Mutsivi looks pleased when you return with a look of triumph on your face.

"You did it, [NAME]! The other lionesses are out tracking them now based on what you told us. They should report back by tomorrow. Get some rest and I'll see you then."

Page 17a

You must wait for the next Rollover to proceed with the story.

Day 3

As you pad into Mutsivi's territory, she comes running up to you excitedly.

"[NAME]! They found some promising places. Will you help us investigate?"

0/3 poacher locations investigated.

You have not fulfilled your task yet.

Page 18

To complete this quest, you must find 3 poacher locations in Explore. The encounters eligible for this can be found below!

You can view your progress on the Bush of Phundundu page.

Once you have investigated all the poacher locations, proceed to click the "I am back!" button.

Poacher Locations

These encounters require you to click the "Investigate" button in order to count towards your quest progress.

It looks like some poachers were preparing to set up traps here. For some reason they aren't here, but you now know the scents and where to find them!
Action Result Reward
Investigate You destroy everything you can, spreading out the tattered remains around the bush. You try to bury what you can, preventing the humans from finding it again. +1 Poachers Investigated
+2% Impression
The smell is pungent and unmistakable. Poachers camp in these makeshift sheds, likely being utilized as a small base between animal traps. You see some animal pelts stuffed into some boxes.
Action Result Reward
Investigate You get to work, wrecking everything into small pieces. You grab whatever seems intact and leave. +1 Poachers Investigated
+1 Broken Drone
+1 Cardboard Box
+1 Serval Skin
You find a suspicious looking camp. It's not a tourist camp, and it's not a ranger camp. There are no patrols or lights - this must be a secret criminal hideout!
Action Result Reward
Investigate You wreck havoc in the camp, destroying all structures, boxes and the spot the humans make fire in. Maybe they summon their own poaching spirits? Nah. You doubt these humans have any connection to nature. In fact, it would be better that they never approach any form of nature again. +1 Poachers Investigated
+1 Coal
+1 Decayed Giraffe Hide
+1 Nesting Material

Mutsivi purrs approvingly when you report back about what you found.

"They are definitely near, but it seems as though those are only common gathering areas, perhaps like a waterhole." She looks thoughtful and nods toward the pride.

"I'll have to convene with the rest of the pride to decide where to go from here. Come check back with us tomorrow and I'll let you know what we've decided."

Page 18a

You must wait for the next Rollover to proceed with the story.

Day 4

The energy of the pride when you return is muted and heavy. They are gathered around grooming each other solemnly. The smell of death is in the air--what happened?!

Mutsivi slowly walks toward you with heavy pawsteps, looking as if she hasn't slept.

"[NAME], something has happened...Tsunga, my dear pridemate...she found the camp. But she..." Her words cut off with a choke and she looks away.

What happened? Is she okay?
Page 19

Mutsivi shakes her head.

"They shot her. She made it back here but...the wound was too severe. She died overnight."

Her words are hollow and full of emotion all at once. She slowly shakes her head, as if struggling to believe what she's saying.

"We need help finding the camp. She told us what she remembered before she died, but it's not much to go off of. These horrible monsters must be stopped before another member of my family is taken from us."

Tell me what you need
Page 20

Taking a deep breath, Mutsivi opens her mouth to speak but is interrupted by a hiss.

"Mutsivi! Don't tell me you're trying to convince [NAME] to help us more? Do you want us all to be shot?"

The anger and hurt in her words makes your pelt prickle. This lioness seems more distressed than the others.

"The ancestors may be powerful, but they can't stop a bullet, Mutsivi! I won't lose the rest of you!" she snarls.

Hmm..
Page 21

Mutsivi's face crumples and any strength she had to face the poachers seems to fade.

"Oh, Shinga..." she murmurs. "We can't let them get away with this. We can't let her death be in vain. She wouldn't want that."

"She wouldn't want us all to die, either!" Shinga shouts, loud enough for the rest of the lionesses to hear. They look over with a myriad of expressions, and it's clear no one is in any state to make any decisions.

I will go find the camp. Stay here and be with one another.
Page 22

Mutsivi frowns, and Shinga scowls and turns away with an exasperated noise. Glancing back to watch her, Mutsivi nods and says:

"We need time to mourn. Do what you can. We'll be waiting."

Without another word, she turns and joins the rest of the pride.

0/10 special camps found.

You have not fulfilled your task yet.

Page 23

To complete this quest, you must find 10 special camps in Explore. The encounters eligible for this can be found below!

You can view your progress on the Bush of Phundundu page.

Once you have investigated all the special camp locations, proceed to click the "Return to the pride" button.

Special Camps

This encounter does not require you to click any buttons, and you will receive +1 progress towards the quest each time you find it in Explore.

You find a big camp made out of makeshift structures. They are not well-designed, and there's no roads or farms nearby. This could potentially be a poacher camp! You make a note of its location.
+1 Special Camp found
NOTE: This encounter does not require you to do any actions or press any buttons.

The pride is waiting when you return, some eager while others look wary. You go into detail about what you've observed: the different types of security around the camps, the routines, and everything you noticed down to the smallest detail.

When you're finished, Mutsivi and Shinga look at one another silently while the pride begins to murmur amongst themselves.

"Go back to your pride, [NAME]. This will take a while to decide what to do. If we can decide..." Shinga mumbles as she turns away.

You've been dismissed for now.

Page 23a

You must wait for the next Rollover to proceed with the story.

Day 5

After a good night's rest, you return to the pride to see Mutsivi and Shinga sitting together expectantly.

"Welcome back, [NAME]. I expect you think you'll hear what we've decided? Turns out we can't decide, so Mutsivi suggested we let you make that call for us."

Shinga does not look pleased, and Mutsivi's face is carefully neutral.

"We'll tell you each of our plans; then, you'll decide which path to follow," Mutsivi says.

Listen to Shinga

This page is only visible if you clicked "Listen to Mutsivi" on Pages 24 and 26.

Sitting tall, Mutsivi fixes you with determined eyes.

"We summoned Kutsiva for a reason. He is here to help us, and we should let him. Tsunga's death will not go unanswered and will not be in vain. Let his spirit enter your body so that you can take vengeance and destroy what's left of the poachers. It's dangerous, but doing this will ensure they never come back and hurt us again. You must kill every last one of them."

Mutsivi's eyes glitter with a hint of malice, and you can tell she's tempted to do it this way herself.

Listen to Shinga

Let me think *

Page 25

This page is only visible if you clicked "Listen to Shinga" on Pages 24 and 25.

Shinga looks bright and eager to share her plan.

"We don't have to choose violence and risk ourselves, [NAME]. The poachers aren't the only humans out there; there are good ones, too. I've seen them attack the poachers and close off areas, doing patrols like we do, not letting the poachers back in. They don't come back, and the animals live in peace. The humans fight them for us. It's their kind that do this, so why not let them take the risk? We just have to figure out how to lure them to the poacher den."

With a satisfied flick of her tail, Shinga holds her head high and locks eyes with you expectantly.
