A ravaging Sahel Drought disrupts migrations sweeping across Africa, claiming lives of humans, livestock and wildlife.
With animals dying, many camps have been set to feed hippos and provide basic sources of water for most needing animals like elephants. Reports on rivers drying up are increasing by the day, as wet seasons never arrive.
What will you lions do?
Will you rampage local farms and villages, or try to survive on scarce herds and starved corpses?
Will you cause a conflict or succumb to plans of nature?
Event Information
This event is highly focused on exploring.
The explore encounters exclusive to this month can be found in all biomes.
Your lion's karma and level, as well as the biome you explore in, do not matter for this event.
In August, the community is working to unlock two separate bars, one of which is a Personal Bar (Humans Killed Bar), and the other is a Community-Effort Bar for collecting Dry Bones - this unlocks the Peddler.
You must accumulate a total of 50 Humans Killed Points to unlock the August Maneater Studs, and this progress is counted by your own progress only. This progress is counted from day 1 of the event, is a personal goal, and can unlock the studs as soon as August 5th each year.
The more Dry Bones we collect in Explore (as a community), the faster we will unlock The Peddler.
There are also two separate shops that will unlock depending on how many Evil or Good actions you do in Explore: The Destroyers (Evil) and The Preservers (Good). These shops are unlocked by your actions only.
The Destroyers is unlocked by earning a total of 300 Evil Points, while The Preservers is unlocked by earning a total of 300 Good Points. You can only have one shop open at one time, but it is possible to open both shops multiple times on one account. If you go below the threshold for either shop, your access will be restricted until you reach 300 Evil or Good Points again, respectively.
This month's currencies are
Carrion Beetles and
Dry Bones.
Carrion Beetles and Dry Bones can both be gained in Explore. Some encounters will award more Carrion Beetles than Dry Bones, and vice versa. You can also earn Carrion Beetles and Dry Bones by playing Fire Escape.
For the entire month of August, there will only be a dry season *. You will not see any rain or any hint of wet season until August ends.
* If you are on the Journey to Vredefort Crater quest and you need to access the Flood Pit, it will be manually opened from 12am Lioden time to 11:59pm Lioden time on August 13th and August 27th.
Thirst-Quenching Items
August's event unlocks a temporary Thirst bar, which displays with your lion's energy, hunger, experience, and impression. Thirst only affects your pride leader, not your pride members.
Your lion's Thirst will drop at a rate of 5% every 30 minutes. It can also randomly drop from certain event encounters. Luckily, you can raise it through certain event encounters, as well as consume water items that are dropped year-round.

Your lion will not die if they reach 100% Thirst. Reaching 100% Thirst just means that you will be unable to fight NPCs in Explore. If you attempt to fight an NPC in Explore while at 100% Thirst, you will receive the following error message.
If you manage to increase your lion's Thirst by even 1%, you'll be able to fight again.
Failed Hunts
August is a scorching month, and your lionesses really feel its effects. Prey is also more difficult to come across due to the lack of available water. The herds are smart—they're migrating to find water elsewhere!
Because of this, your lionesses have a higher chance of failing to bring back anything whilst hunting.

Fire Escape

Fire Escape is an endless runner-type minigame that is exclusively available during August's event. Within Fire Escape, you play a male lion that is desperately trying to, well, escape the fire that is burning his entire home to the ground. There are obstacles that you need to avoid, Carrion Beetles to collect, and as you earn points and progress through the game, the lion runs faster and faster!
You can submit your score once per day to earn up to a maximum of 200 Carrion Beetles and 100 Dry Bones per day—if you play Fire Escape each day and hit the maximum score every time, that's roughly an additional 6,000 Carrion Beetles and 3,000 Dry Bones for you to spend! Score sending for Fire Escape resets at midnight (12am) Lioden time, not at rollover (2:05am).
To find out more information on Fire Escape, check out the Fire Escape section of the Event Games page!

| A small herd of boars has stopped here to regain some energy for their further journey. They all look exhausted, and the heat doesn't make their rest refreshing at all. By their shallow breathing, you can tell that they are desperate to find something to drink. | ||
|---|---|---|
| Action | Result | Reward |
| Approach | You approach the surprised boars and tell them about a shadowy place where they might find some water. If there is anything left, of course. If the weather were less deadly, you would probably take the opportunity to have some delicious meal right here, but there's more good in it if these boars make it alive today. If they reproduce, there will be more for you and your cubs. That's the holistic approach your pride needs. | +2 Karma +2 Carrion Beetles +2 Good Points |
| Your intentions were pure, but the survival instincts of the boars were stronger than anything. Before you could even open your mouth to tell them about a good place to rest, they all fled with an unexpected burst of fresh energy. You really hope they will make it. You want to make sure that your future food is nutritious. You check what they were digging for, hmm! Nice. | +2 Dry Bones +4 Carrion Beetles |
|
| Charge | There's no better moment than now. You charge at the boars, but it seems that they weren't on their last legs, after all. The air fills with loud squeals as they flee in all directions, distracting you completely and leaving you confused. Feeling a little humiliated, you promise to find them no matter what. | -2 Karma +2 Carrion Beetles +2 Evil Points |
| You jump at the boars, fixing your gaze on the weakest one. To your surprise, they are all surprisingly fast, and you didn't expect creatures on the verge of death to be this focused. They run in all directions, confusing you, and manage to flee without a scratch. That was impressive, but you're still pissed off. You kick at the ground, uncovering interesting stuff. | +2 Dry Bones +4 Carrion Beetles |
|
| Observe | You decide to wait a little and see if the boars move anytime soon. You believe they will lead you to water, but they are certainly testing your patience. You find yourself sighing and yawning, and you don't even know how much time has passed. You feel something crawling over you. | +2 Dry Bones +2 Carrion Beetles |
| You know that the boars will move eventually, and their dire condition will force them to look for somewhere safe. A place with shade and water, that is. You follow them in the distance, smiling when you notice a dried river in front of you after some time. The water is muddy and almost completely gone, but there's enough for you to take a few sips. | +4 Carrion Beetles -10% Thirst +2% Energy |

| Lead | It's best not to reveal yourself, as this would alarm the calf's mother and trigger her protective instincts. By making various sounds, you lure the calf towards a path leading to a waterhole. The elephants will regain some strength, and you will have your territory safe and clear again. You can be proud of yourself! | +2 Karma +2 Dry Bones +2 Carrion Beetles +2 Good Points |
| Roar | You know that if you let out a loud roar, the mother elephant won't risk staying here for too long. There is a small, natural waterhole nearby, and you know that your voice will lead them towards it. It's satisfying to observe both elephants find a place to quench their thirst. Hard times bring out the leader in you. | +1 Karma +5 Dry Bones +1% Impression +1 Good Point |
| Follow | You silently follow both elephants, careful not to make any noise. The mother is extra cautious, and it can end badly for you if you take a step too close. Eventually, they both reach a small, drying waterhole, but there seems to be enough water for all of you. | -5% Thirst +3 Carrion Beetles |

| Stop them! | With a snarl you leap at them, demanding they stop. They just laugh and dart away, lighting the grass and nearby plants on fire as they go. You hurry after them and try to stomp out the fires as much as you can, but they just keep setting more as they get farther and farther away. You're forced to stop, gasping for breath. What has this world come to? Dried bones crack in the heat nearby like a bad omen. | +2 Dry Bones +1 Carrion Beetle +1% Impression |

They laugh manically and begin to set the grass and brush next to you on fire, trapping you! You leap toward them, seeing an opening where they haven't yet set anything on fire and manage to barrel through it just in time. | When the sun is low on the horizon, a glistening shine on the surface of the water makes it easy to be noticed. You approach this man-made waterhole cautiously, taking in the obvious scent of danger, observing the surroundings before you dare to drink. Thankfully, this place appears to be a tourist attraction, and the humans are hidden among observation decks, quietly and harmlessly watching. | ||

| You approach a big, overgrown waterhole. Its water is clear and shaded by green foliage. It's refreshing just to be near this little pond! You spot another lion drinking at the edge and carefully observing the slightest ripple. This makes you uneasy. You ask the other lion what's wrong, and he exclaims there may be a crocodile below the surface. | ||
|---|---|---|
| Action | Result | Reward |
| Roar | You stand at the edge of the waterhole and let out a deep, scary roar, shaking the surface and ground beneath your paws. Ripples within the water move away from where you're standing. Whatever was lurking under the water, you scared it away! You can drink peacefully, and your temporary buddy can relax as well. | -100% Thirst +1% Impression |

| You pounce into the water and quickly discover that the other lion was right! You manage to pin the crocodile down and wrestle with it, splashing water everywhere. | You approach an area that has been dried out by the scorching sun. There used to be a waterhole here, but it appears to be long gone now. Some animals seemed to have spent the last minutes of their lives here. They were just too weak to carry on. | ||

| You come across a large pond that's suspiciously full of water. Maybe the drought hasn't taken this water source away just yet. Best to be on your guard. | ||

| Explore the north side | Your nose leads you to the north side of the pond, where two carcasses float just under the water. They have been here for a bit, it seems, but not as long as you'd expect. What happened to them? You collect what you can, and fill your thirsty belly. The water is fresh, if a bit earthy tasting. Strange. Maybe a flood? | +5 Dry Bones -100% Thirst +1 Drowned Rhino +1 Hippo Skull |
| Explore the south side | Your paws take you to the south side of the pond where the shore is littered with odd bits and bobs. Some bones, rocks, and beetles. Useful, sure, but why are they scattered about like this? They're still damp, too, so they haven't been here long. Perhaps they were washed ashore with a flood? When you lap eagerly at the water, it definitely tastes earthy. Perhaps the rains got too heavy for the earth to absorb all of the water. | +3 Dry Bones +2 Carrion Beetles -100% Thirst +2 Pet Rock |
| Make a lap around | No use sitting around when luck has crossed your path. You investigate all along the shore and stumble upon a fairly fresh wildebeest and zebra soaked to the bone. It's as strange as the presence of the pond itself. The water tastes earthy, and you wonder if perhaps there was a flash flood and these poor souls were unlucky to get caught in it. Unlucky for them, that is. Your belly and pride will be happy. | +2 Carrion Beetles -100% Thirst +1 Drowned Wildebeest +1 Drowned Zebra |

| You hide behind some rather big boulders and observe humans engaging in odd activities with an object. Do you dare risk it...? | ||

| Crawl closer | You fake a weak noise and crawl close to the humans, your head hanging low. Some of them tense up and aim their weapons at you, but another part of the group fills a big bowl, places it near you, and slowly backs off. You creep up to the bowl and drink the amazing, crystal clear water contained within. So refreshing! These humans are nice - they even took some pictures of you! | -100% Thirst +10% Energy +2 Good Points |
| You lower your head and slowly crawl out from behind the boulders, intending to plead for some water. The humans seem to be very frightened! You must have really surprised them, or perhaps you just aren't that good at pretending to be weak. The humans shout at you and make threatening gestures with their weapons. Huff! Fine. You tell yourself that maybe these humans had some bad experiences with other lions. While you're backing away, you step into something. | +1 Dry Bone +1 Carrion Beetle |

| You notice a couple of Red Fulani cows nearby, but they seem disturbed by something. When you take a closer look, you spot a crocodile that's apparently trying its chances to catch the young calf running by the side of its parents. | ||
|---|---|---|
| Action | Result | Reward |
| Catch the calf | It's the easiest prey, but this is not a time to show off, especially when no one is watching. All the cattle are weakened, and you can really feel the lack of resistance when you finally catch the calf. As soon as it stopped moving, you dragged it to the side, making sure that the crocodile could see it well. | -2 Karma +3 Carrion Beetles +2 Evil Points +1 Cow Carcass |
| Catch the adult cow | While catching the calf seems easy and a guaranteed success, the bigger cow will keep you and your pride full for longer. You jump successfully, managing to sink your fangs into the soft flesh. However, a sudden, sharp kick forces you to loosen your grip. The heatwave has taken its toll, and you can feel that you are not as strong as usual. With a sigh, you decide to rest a couple of steps away, and you notice a cow skull staring at you with its empty eye sockets, as if it were mocking you. | +6 Dry Bones +1 Carrion Beetle +1 Cow Skull |
| Catch the crocodile | With a loud growl, you run after the bovines for a while, only to jump at the surprised crocodile. | You recognize these peculiar bovines at once. Their massive horns of Kuri Cattle are unique, and their sight is a sign of two things: humans and water. Humans won't bring their animals without making sure that they have something to drink. Even if there was no natural water source nearby, humans could create one. You must be extra careful now. | ||
|---|---|---|
| Action | Result | Reward |
| Approach calmly | Even if domesticated, these cows can still have some natural instincts, so you move slowly, trying to look harmless. This seems to work, as the cows let you come close without panicking. As you had predicted, the human-made water source is there waiting for you. After a few sips, you notice the shocked gaze of the cows looking at you as if they are frozen. Is it their first time encountering a lion? You puff out your chest and try to drink as elegantly as possible. Let them remember what the king looks like. | +1 Karma -100% Thirst +1% Impression +1 Good Point |
| Keeping your hunting instincts at bay, you walk smoothly, as if you own the place. As you had predicted, the human-made waterhole is there and, in contrast to all the dried-up lakes and rivers, it is full and deliciously fresh. You send your most charming smile to the cows, promising to be gentle today. You actually plan to keep your word and show your softer side. Humans can find you at any moment, so it's better not to stay too long. | +1 Karma +2 Carrion Beetles -20% Thirst +1 Good Point |

| Rush | The presence of humans ruins the place completely, as you know that you cannot spend much time here. As soon as you spot the human-made waterhole nearby, you run there as if your life depended on it. The cows stare at you in shock, probably seeing a lion for the first time. You wouldn't be yourself if you didn't check whether they recognize your strength and power, even if you don't plan to eat them now. | -2 Karma +2 Carrion Beetles -50% Thirst +1% Impression |
| You must act quickly before humans discover you here. There is no time to spare, so the cows can feel safe for now. You rush to the water as soon as you confirm that the humans have taken care of their cattle and made them a place to drink. If they can bring water from nowhere just like that, they probably won't even notice that you've been here. | +2 Dry Bones +3 Carrion Beetles |
|
| Hunt | If you can have a meal and a drink at the same time, you will. You know that it's very risky, as humans can find you here at any moment, but you trust your skills. You swiftly catch the calf and drag it to the waterhole to finish your job faster. Pulling the carcass out is much harder, but you don't regret it for a second. | -1 Karma -100% Thirst +1 Evil Point +1 Drowned Cow |
| You planned to have a royal dinner in the human-made waterhole, but when you missed the calf and noticed that the cows started to be louder, you had to abandon your plan in fear of being discovered. The Preservers
You see Shamash, a protective lioness, offering rewards for good deeds.
"Humans are sacrificing their lives to help animals survive these droughts. Those who succumb to cruelty aren’t worth fighting for."
The Preservers is one of three event shops for August. This shop is opened by committing enough Good actions to fill the "Good Karma" bar. Everything in this shop costs
Carrion Beetles.

The Destroyers
You see Gaunab, a scarred man-eating lion, offering rewards for naughty deeds.
"Human meat is just as tasty as a zebra's. Only fools skip such easy meal in these rough times. Eat man, and let beasts repopulate!"
The Destroyers is one of three event shops for August. This shop is opened by committing enough Evil actions to fill the "Evil Karma" bar. Everything in this shop costs
Carrion Beetles.

The Peddler
In these harsh times my kind can live on bone marrow only. In exchange for those bones you find around, we offer some items we scavenge when soaring above the dried lands.
The Peddler is one of three event shops for August. This shop is unlocked by a community effort to collect as many Dry Bones as possible in Explore. Everything in this shop costs
Dry Bones.
As of 2018, when The Peddler has been unlocked, you will receive the "Bone Collector" title as well as the "Bone Collector" achievement the first time you visit this page. You can only unlock the title and achievement once per account.

Vulture Chase
The vultures are circling overhead, looking as though they're ready to land and feast on some poor creature who is struggling to survive the heat. Maybe you could send one of your adolescents to practice their hunting skills?
For a fee of 5 Dry Bones, you can send your adolescent females out to Vulture Chase, a small extension of The Peddler. Each adolescent can chase vultures once per rollover, and each chasing session will last 60 minutes. You can only send out one adolescent per session, so prioritise which one you want to send out first!
At the end of the session, your chosen adolescent will earn 50 Experience and 2 to 5 random stats.
Tracking Herds
Some of the vultures that your adolescents were chasing have come to you. In your brilliance, you decide it would be a good idea to use them to keep track of the herd migrations near your pride, and gather other useful information.
For a fee of 50 Dry Bones, your pride leader can track herds to receive Experience once per rollover! The Experience that they receive is equal to (LVL x 30). A level 5 lion would earn 150 Experience, while a level 20 lion would receive 600 Experience.
Savage Males
The Man-Eaters Have Arrived...
With all the Man-Eating happening around, a few Pariah, Savage and Tsavo Lions have appeared, interested in the lifestyle.
Do you want to risk it and blend your genes with their morbid sentience?
*Males will change every 24 hours.
Savage Males (also referred to as "August Studs", "Maneater Studs", and "Savage Studs") are unlocked by a personal, account-bound effort to kill as many humans as possible in Explore. The Studs will unlock as soon as you reach 50 Humans Killed Points, and not sooner than August 5th. The progress for this bar is counted from the very first day of the event, though!
Savage Males are male NPCs that you can stud your lionesses to for a fee of 200 Dry Bones or 600 Carrion Beetles per one stud. They are not player-owned, so no need to wait for them to accept your stud request! The main purpose of the Savage Male area is to release new, exclusive bases, mane shapes, and markings that can only be passed down from breeding to a Savage Male. It is important to remember that breeding to a Savage Male does not guarantee that offspring will inherit the stud's base, mane shape, and/or markings.
You also cannot use breeding items on Savage Males. They are not owned by other players and operate simply as NPCs, so there is no way to send any male breeding items to a Savage Male. This includes Grains of Paradise and Buffalo Scrotums. There is a workaround with cub guarantee items; however, it requires you to own a Double Uterus lioness. You can use a cub guarantee item on your stud, breed to your Double Uterus, then breed her to a Savage Male. This will overwrite half of her cubs' genetics with the Savage Male's genetics.
The Savage Stud breedings are guaranteed to give you at least 2 cubs per breeding, as of August 2025.
At 2:05 am Lioden time, the available stud will switch out and cycle to the next one that is lined up. Once the last unique stud has been displayed, it will cycle back around to the first stud released and loop through them until August ends.
You can breed any of your lionesses with any of the studs, provided she is in heat, she is Very Low (1%) fertility or higher, she is between the ages of 2 years and 14 years, and you have enough currency to cover the cost.
As of 2018, when the Savage Males area has been unlocked, you will receive the "Maneater" title as well as the "Maneater" achievement the first time you visit this page. You can only unlock the title and achievement once per account.
Click here to view a directory of all Savage Male studs throughout all August events!
